Teaching Philosophy
“In order to understand the expectations I have for my students I feel it is important for people to understand why I teach. I enjoy the challenge of teaching. Not all students think alike. Therefore, I find it invigorating to find the correct style for each student.
My philosophy of teaching has developed over many years of experience. It includes using the Suzuki Method, which allows students to learn through regular listening, repetition, and praise.
As a member of my studio I expect students and their families to be respectful and dedicated. Students must want to learn. They should be willing to practice for the amount of time agreed upon with their parents and me. Lastly, parents and students are expected to clearly communicate any problems or concerns.

During my 6 years in Becky’s studio, she helped me transform my technique and musicality, and created a welcoming space to help me grow both as an individual artist and as a part of an ensemble. Becky’s teaching style is unique in that she is able to adapt herself to teach any age with patience, encouragement, and comprehensive instruction. Whether you’re just starting out, or you’re an advanced musician looking for someone to challenge you, I highly recommend taking lessons with her.

…My daughter and I have took violin/viola lessons with Becky Barca-Tinus for over fifteen years. Becky is a uniquely careful, inspiring and imaginative teacher. Having rehearsed with her advanced ensembles, I have witnessed how she instills a disciplined but joyful approach to learning. Her studio is an island treasure, and we are blessed to have such a fabulous positive force working with our youth. Becky’s influence on her pupils will certainly last throughout their lives, and that includes me.

…My sustained passion for violin and music are almost entirely due to the time I spent working with Becky. I have yet to find a teacher who has made me feel as comfortable and open to learning as she made me feel. After years of work together Becky never failed to keep me on my toes with new pieces and techniques, but most importantly she made learning the violin (a very difficult instrument to master) incredibly fun…
